Home at last

Today started at 7:00am when both my roommate and I woke up to check our flights. They were both on time. We got our shuttle to the airport and arrived at Cedar Rapids airport at around 9:45. There were about 7 people from AmeriCorps NCCC on my first flight. We took off early and landed in MN on time. Then Jules, Mike, and I went on to our next and final flight to Boston. We took off on time and landed on time which was awesome considering how many people's flights were delayed or even cancelled. I felt so bad for some people from campus that went to the airport and couldn't get a flight out till Monday so they had to go back to campus. But I made it. Mom and dad picked me up from the airport and we went to Ann and Ed's do decorate the christmas tree like we do every year. It was so much fun. Ann feed me real food and I ate so much junk. I kept having to step back because it was just so weird to be back home and with family. When driving up to my house it really hit me that I was home. Now I am in my DOUBLE size bed using MY COMPUTER. It feels so weird to be doing this. Kind of lonely actually without my roomie Laura. But it is nice. Well I am pretty tierd. So night all. Love you. It's good to be home.

Last night in Vinton

So today has been a little crazy. We had a community meeting this morning and found out that my Team Leader (TL) is in the hospital. We had our debrief today and had to do it without her. But thanks to Jacob our Assistant Team Leader we did a great job. I started packing already and can't wait to be home. I feel bad for all those people's thats flights are delayed because of this snow storm coming. But I am happy that my flights aren't affected by the storm :) So by this time tonight I will be in Boston. Actually I will be in Charlestown decorating Ann's Christmas tree. I am so happy. I won't be able to sit still on the plane tomorrow. I am also happy that I have people on both my flights so I won't be so lonely. It sucks flying alone. Anyway I should go finish packing. Love you guys. See you TOMORROW!!!!!!!

Today was a service day. I worked with Habitat for Humanity in Iowa City and ReStore. I worked with people from other groups and had a great time. It was nice to get a chance to work and get to know other people on my campus. We did recycling, swept, and winterized a house. I just got back a little while ago. I met another person from MA today. She is from Westboro and we are on the same flights on Saturday which is pretty nice. I am also on my first flight with my roomie which is AWESOME. ANyway I can't wait to be home. Love you guys.

Back in VINTON

Today started at 5:00am when I had to wake up. We left Toledo at 6:00am and started heading to Vinton. We met up with Cedar 1 which is the team we will be living with in Mobile Alabama. We had lunch with them at Subway. We made it back to Vinton at 3:00pm. We made great timing. We got here and there is SNOW everywhere which is weird because there was no snow in Toledo. I got everything to my room and was attacked by my roommate. I missed her so much. Mom you would be proud of me, I unpacked everything right away. After unpacking I went to the store to pick up stuff to make dinner tomorrow. I am making a Stir Fry. After that my team and I went to Peony (the local resturant) for dinner. It was yummy, but I still miss chinese food from home. Now I am going to update some pictures and stuff on here. That's it for now. Love you. I will be home in 4 days!!!!!

Wrapping up in Toledo

I was at the Mannor House from 3:30pm to 8pm on Saturday. After finishing the ISP we came back to the house. We had a hydration party, which is playing drinking games but using gatorade. We had a good time and I kicked butt in gaterade pong.

On Sunday we hung out before going to the Mannor House at 3:30. After that we came back to the house then went out to a team dinner at Doc Watson's. I had the best burger ever. It was called the Hudiani. It was stuffed with mushrooms, bacon, and cheddar cheese and had BBQ sauce and grilled onions on it. It was the first time I have had red meat in such a long time. Then for desert I shared a fried snickers with Jim. It was amazing. After dinner I came back to the hosue and went to sleep.

Today (Monday) we had a team meeting about everything we had to do today. Then a bunch of us went to the post office to mail some things home that wouldn't fit in our bags. So mom, expect two packages with your name on it from me but please don't open them. After the post office I went to the greenhouse to say good bye to Joseway and Jason. I came back to the house and packed and everything actually fit in my bags I can't believe it. After packing our site supervisor came over to do our debrief and had only good things to say about us. Then we went back over to TBG to say good bye to all the guys we worked with. It was sad but we will keep in touch. Then I had my evaluation with Shalyn and she said that I was too motherly with people and needed to stop doing things for them and teach them how to do them for themselves. Also when I am talking and I am expressing my concerns to people I should speak up if they aren't listening to me. She said sometimes you have to rock the boat a little. After my one on one I went outside and kicked around a ball with a bunch of my teammates. Now I am sitting at the house about to get ready to go see the lights at the Toledo Zoo. I am pretty excited to go to the Zoo. Love you guys. I will be home sooooo soon. I can't freaking wait. I will be home on SATURDAY!!!!!!!

Last week in Toledo

This was a very COLD week to be working outside. But I got to work in the greenhouse most of the days which was pretty amazing. I potted plants, pruned plants, and learned much more about gardening and plants than I ever thought I would know. This week all blends together in my head but I will try to explain it well.

On Wednesday I worked in the greenhouse for a little bit with Amy then we went over to the Toledo Grows house and finished sorting seeds and cleaning the place up. Around 2:30pm I went with Matti and Ian to do brew waste in the city. We picked up brew waste at a brewery and then dumped it on one of the gardens. The brewery gave us a whole case of beer for it lol. We came back to the house and hung out. Unfortunatley that day two computers were stolen from my teammates right out of our house along with an Ipod. That is kinda scarey. After the police came and everything a couple of us went to Ian's to get away from everything.

On Thursday it was 5 degrees below 0 with the wind chill. We were outside picking up fallen limbs from trees for 2 hours. I froze my ass off. Then we got to go inside for a while and work in the greenhouse. Then 4 other of my teammates and I delievered a plaster statue of a "Lady with Birds" to Camp Couragoues which is a camp for special needs kids. It was fun to see the place even if the kids weren't there. After delivering the statue I worked back in the greenhouse for the rest of the day. After work we all got ready then went to a pot luck at Matt's who works for TBG. It was a kind of good bye thing for us. We ate good food, played, games, talked, and played Wii. I had a good time.

On Friday I worked in the greenhouse in the morning with a bunch of people potting plants and stuff. After lunch I made phone calls to donor's for TBG thanking people for their support. After work we did PT then dropped some people off at the Art Museum and then I went food shopping for stuff to make for dinner. I made cousin Sara's Orange chicken, Grandma Duddy's Kugel, potato pancakes, and some veggies. It was a very good Hannukah dinner. After dinner I went out with a guy named Jason who works at TBG. He is very sweet. I had a good time.

Today is Saturday and the plan is to have a team meeting then we are doing an ISP at the Monor House being Hosts. This isn't really how I want to spend my Saturday but o well I will be home soon. Can't wait.

New Spike Assignment

Saturday was a good day. I ended up going to the bar with the over age people on my team. We had a good time.

On Sunday I worked at Heralding the Holidays in the Childrens Activities area. I helped children make glittering pinecone ornaments. It was fun to be workign with kids again. After working I did some laundry and then my teammate Jacob make Corn Beef and Cabbage with Soda bread. It was really good. I enjoyed it.

On Monday morning we wokr up and it was snowing. We went to work at 9:30am two houses down from us at The Toledo GROWS house. I cleaned and organized their kitchen and made pizza for everyone. Then I sorted seeds. We eneded up working until 3pm. After work we came back to the house and cleaned. Then we had a team meeting. Dinner last night was soup and sandwhiches. After dinner with went out with Matti and Jim from my team and Ian who is part of AmeriCorp state and National. We went to a piercing place where I got my cartaledge pierced. AFter that we went back to Ian's house and hung out and watched movies. It was nice to get out of the house and get away from some of my team members.

Today (Tuesday) I worked in the Green House at TBG with Jake and Joshua which is pronounced joses-way. We cleaned pots and repotted plants. After work we came back and had a phone meeting with our Unit Leader then we did PT. I am planning on going to bed early tonight.

Now for the news. My next project is going to be in Mobile, Alabama for about 6 weeks. I will be doing a construction project building houses with Habitat for Humanity. I will be living in a double wide with another team so there will be a total of 20 of us in that trailer. I am excited but nervous. Thats my news.

Catch up

Sorry it's been so long since I have written. It has been a crazy week here. The internet at the house has not been working at all, which is pretty annoying. So here is an update.

On Tuesday I was back at TBG and worked in the perrenial garden with Jim, Jacob, Jake and Katie. It was a pretty good day. It was unseasonably warm and very sunny. After work we all hung out, my teammate Jim told his life story which was very interesting. Then I went to bed pretty early.

On Wednesday I was not feeling good at all. I had been feeling crappy since the weekend. I worked outside till 11am sorting greens and berries. Then my team leader, Shalyn took me to a clinic that was in a super market. It turns out I have a really bad sinus infection that had been building for a while. SHe put me on strong antibiotics 3 times a day, extra strength mucinex, 500 mg tylenol every 4 hours, and 600 mg of IBprofen every 6 hourr. So I am pretty much drugged up and exhausted. She told me to stay home and rest for the rest of the day and most likely the next. I went home had lunch then took a nap till about 3:30. AFter my nap I hung out with people, ate diner and relaxed. Then I went to sleep at 8:45 pm.

On Thursday I still wasn't feeling any better but I did end up going to work. I strung holiday lights on bushes and cleaned the maintanance building. Then I went home, ate lunch and took a nap till about 4. After my nap I felt better. I had helped make dinner with Sarah and then had dinner with my teammates. Some of my teammates left to teach kids how to cook veggies. I played Wii sports with Jim. When the rest of my teammates got back we hung out and all of the girls on my team ended up going to sleep about 10:30pm. We never go to sleep at the same time.

On Friday I was feeling better. I got to work in the greenhouse all day with Sarah. We had a good time. We put the cananas in crates and brought them over to the Toledo Grows house. I got to drive the Kobota with Joshua. AFter that Sarah and I pulled some flowers off of plants, feed the plants (lol), then repotted plants. It was a good day. I left work early to teach inner city kids how to cook veggies with Matti, Jim, and Katie. It was a fun time but was really disorganized. This was also the first night of Heralding the Holidays. When we got back I went to Heralding the Holidays with Matti. It was fun. We met Sarah there and went to all the different art studios where you could by what they made. I got so good stuff. We were there for a while then came back and hung out at the hosue. A bunch of people went to a coffee shop until 12am and I went to sleep around 10:30 lol.

This morning, Saturday, I worked at Heralding the Holidays with Sarah fron 10 - 1. Then we came back and had some lunch. Now I am hanging out at the house listening to Cat Stevens with Matti. A little later a bunch of us are going to a shopping center to walk around. After that those of us that are of age are going to a bar to have a few drinks. IT is shaping up to be a pretty good day today. O by the way it snowed today and it stuck to the ground. It made me happy. Well I am still feeling yukky but I am not letting it ruin my mood. I hope you are all doing well. Love you.

Monday

Today I didn't really want to go work with Toledo Grows. It was so cold out today that my fingers were frozen while I ate lunch. We had to eat lunch outside on picnic benches. I did composting from 9am till 12 in the afternoon. Let's just say my back hurts. After lunch Matt came and picked up Sarah, katie, Matti, and I to go do some display beds at the Monor house in the Wild Wood Park.

I got to do the displays for a while then Matt pulled me from it to unpot some plants to take in for the winter. Then I got to go back to the display beds. Then it was time to go back to the house.

When we got back to the house we hung out for a little bit then we played Ultimate Frisbee for PT. That was alot of fun. I was on a team with Matti, Lauren, Jim, and myself. We won 10 - 2. I think I hurt my right hip while stretching and during Ultimate. It hurts pretty bad. After Ultimate we hung out and played Apples to Apples. By the way thanks for buying me that mom. My team was so happy when I showed them I had it.

Then we had dinner. It was a veggie quina bake. It was good but it should have been a side dish instead of a main meal. Then a couple of my teammates and I went to a coffee shop, which is where I am now to use the interent. Too bad this computer isnt letting me upload my pictures. Well I am tierd and it is time to go. Love you guys.

Family Reunion and such

On black Friday mom and I woke up at 3am to go shopping. We went to Kohls and the mall. We got some good stuff. We got to Becky at 8am. Then we drove to Long Island New York for Grandma Duddy's unvieling. It was sad but I am glad I got to be there. After the unveiling we went to Arrowwood for the family reunion. It was nice to see everyone. I went to bed early because I had gotten 6 hours of sleep in two days.

On Saturday we woke up and went to the best breakfast buffet EVER. It was soooo good. After breakfast Becky, Mom and I went shopping in Greenwhich. After that we went to a mall need by and went to PF Changs for lunch. It was a great lunch. Then we went back to the hotel and hung out for a while.

We did a yankee swap for the party. It was funny cause it took my family a while to understand the rules. It was a good time. Then we took family pictuers which was fun.

On Sunday we had an amazing breakfast again then we left at 11am to get me to the airport for my plane. I did not want to leave my family. I hugged Dad and wouldn't let go.I did the samew thing with mom. It was hard to leave them again but it was nice to know that I am going home in a little over 2 weeks. We sat in traffic for a while but I made my plane. I got back to Toledo by 9pm. It was a long day but worth it. I had a good time seeing my family. I have a bunch of pictures to upload but the computer I am using is being funky and won't let me upload the pictures so just bare with me. I love you guys.

Thanksgiving

Today I got up at 3:00am. I got to the airport in Toledo Ohio at 4:40am. Lauren, Katie, and I got on our flight at 5:10 this morning. We were in the air for about 17 minutes. The flight was a little bumpy but it was fast. We landed in Detroit and Katie and I had to run to get to our connections. I almost missed my connection. The plane was nice and big. I got the aisle seat and someone had the window seat. We were lucky and didn't have anyone in the middle seat. The flight was an hour and 6 minutes. I landed early which was awesome. My bag was one of the first off the plane. Mom and Dad picked me up from the airport. It was SO nice to see them.

I got to Becky's house around 9:15am. She looks so great. Today was a great day. Becky's in-laws came and Matt's step sisters and his brother. It was so nice to have everyone together. I felt so fortunate to be with my family for this holiday. After the food I took a nap for about 2 hours. Apparently Mom came up stairs to wake me up and I didn't even know that. I had a nice hour and a half nap. Then we all hung out and everyone went home.

My mom, Becky and I went through the circulars for black Friday. We are all just hanging out now and I am having a great time. I can't say that enough. Hope you all had as good a Thanksgiving as I did. Love you.

The day before

Today seemed like it dragged by. So I woke up 20 minutes late from working my ass of for the last couple of days. Today at work I did some displays in small beds with blue spruce and bitter sweet. I also helped string christmas lights on trees all over the garden. We worked until 3 and then had a holiday party at work. It was really nice. As an added bonus Shalyn canceled PT. We were all very excited.

O I forgot to tell you I played hacky sack for an hour and a half last night with 4 other people on my team. It was really fun. I am spastic when I do hacky sack as well as make crazy noises that make my teammates laugh so hard they are on the floor.

After work we came back to the house and relaxed for a while. I made oatmeal cookies and a big cookie pizza thing. My teammates loved me for that. My teammate Amy left to go home. Sarah, Katie, and Lauren went to the gym. Jacob, Shalyn, Jim, Matti, Jake and I stayed at the house. We played Mario Kart on the Wii. Let me just tell you that I suck at that. I am so good at Mario Kart on N64 but not on the Wii. When the girls came back from the gym we went to little ceasers to get pizza. it is cheap pizza in all senses. But it served it's purpose.

I plan on staying up all night. I can't wait to see everyone. Well Iuess I will see some of you soon. By the way I made a shutter fly account with all my pictures on it. The link is http://myamericorpjourney.shutterfly.com/ If you would like me to set it up that every time I add pictures to the site it sends you and email I would love to do that for you. Just let me know. Love you guys.

Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday

So Sunday was a pretty good day. We went to Wildwood Park to play flag football with people from TBG and some other people. It was really fun to watch and I also played frisbee. After that we went to Tony Pacos which is a famous hotdog place. It was very yummy. That was in downtown Toledo. After dinner we went to see the Toledo minor league hockey team play. It was a good experience and they won. After the game Matt a guy who works at TBG took us around Downtown Toledo.

Monday we worked in downtown Toledo with Toledo Grows. We worked with some other kid laying garden beds and compost. Shoveling compost and pushing wheelbarrels all day is hard work. We were all exhausted after work. After work we had dinner, spaghetti and sauce. Then I went to the super market and got stuff to make a pasta salad for a pot luck. Then I pasted out.

Tuesday we worked at TBG. I worked with the Garden Forum putting in new displays for the holidays. I worked with my teammate Sarah who I love. Now that I am exhausted again I am going to do PT, then clean, then pass out. I am so excited to see my family and get some rest. Here are so pictures.

Toledo Update

As you can tell it is hard to find the time and resources to get on the internet. This week went by really fast. On Thursday I identified plants and trees with Matt who works at TBG. After that I did some weedineg and cleaning of different areas. I got to drive the golf cart again. I love it. But it makes me miss driving my car. Hopefully I will get to drive when I go to Becky's for Thanksgiving. Hint Hint. After work on Thursday we went home to relax. We started telling life stories to try to get to know everyone a little better. I really liked that. On Friday I separated Canaans which are a type of flower. They are the weirdest looking bulbs I have ever seen though. After that I cleaned up the pioneer garden and some other areas. While doing this I told some stories with Sarah. That was nice. After work we did PT and played Ultimate Frisbee which was really fun. I actually scored and threw the frisbee well. After PT we told more life stories and then we had dinner. After dinner some of us went to Starbucks to hang out and other people went to the movies.

Now it is Saturday morning and I got to sleep in till 10:15am. Which was AMAZING!!! Today we plan on going around the gardens to take picturs, then do some laundry, and go out tonight to a bar possibly.

Living with 9 people in a house isn't as bad as I thought it would be. We all have a pretty good time. Sharing a room with 5 girls isn't bad either. I am having a good time here. Here are some pictures of what I have been doing.

Toledo Ohio

Sorry I haven't written in a while. It is hard to find internet access. So I am safely in Toledo. The trip took 11 hours because we had to stop every 2 hours to switch drivers and change seats. The ride wasn't bad at all. We left Vinton Iowa at 6:30am and arrived in Toledo at 6:30 pm. We were greeted by Phillip who is an executive at Toledo Botanical Garden also known as TBG. We went to this AWESOME pizza place for dinner called Amies. We had a BBQ chicken pizza, a Greek pizza, and loaded meet pizza, and a caprese pizza with chicken. It was GREAT. Then we went to pick up some food for dinners and lunches.
O I forgot to tell you that I am sharing a room with 5 other girls. The room we are staying in is smaller than my room at home. Also there are two bunk beds and two people sleeping on mattresses on the floor. There are three boys who are sharing a pink room the same size as our room. The TL (team leader) has her own room. We have a fire place!!!
There first night we got here I had a minor melt down but I recovered quickly. On Tuesday we started at the TBG. It is a 65 acre botanical garden that has an artist village. The artist village has a glassing blowing place, a stained glass place, a pottery place and ALOT more. I got to watch two guys blows glass and I will have the opportunity to glow a glass orament. I am so excited about that. On Tuesday we also cleaned up some garden beds. Then we all had dinner together which was nice. I made a hungarian dish with my teammate Amy. It was noodles, cabbage, and bacon. It was GREAT.
Then we met another AmeriCorp member that is part of the State and National branch. He is 23 and is living at the intern house by himself. He is really nice and his name is Ethan. A couple of my teammates and I went to a Hooka Bar. It was an experience. I smoked Mango flavored tobacco. Then today I raked leaves, pulled weeds, and cut back a perrenial garden. OOOOO I forgot something important. I get to drive golf carts around the gardens and I am so happy about it.
Tonight we had PT, then finally unpacked. Now I am going to eat a bean soup. I am trying all these new things and I am liking them all. If you guys want to know anything else just let me know. Love you all.

So today was AmeriLympics. It was a good day. We had NO trainings and got to be outside. Oak beat Cedar all day which was nice. My team ended up winning 5 events, tieing 1 event and losing 1 event. We won at kickball. We won at the boot toss which was tossing a boot and seeing where it would land. Then we did cherades, we won at cherades. Then we played ultimate freesbee which we tied at. It was a really good game. After ultimate freesbee we did the egg relay which we won. After the egg relay was dodgeball which we won. The last even we did was dizzy bat. We lost at dizzy bat. I fell on my face twice. As you all know I don't like being dizzy. That was my day and now I am tierd and going to bed. Love you guys

Disaster Trainings and Brocintus

This week has been full of different trainings. For the last couple of days we have been going through disaster trainings. Let me tell you they aren't fun. Add to that being sick and you get the picture.

To update some of you a person in my group was sent home. He was not an asset to the team and was more of a detriment. So now that he is gone my team is much happier. Also 4 people in my team including me have brocitus. I am exhausted, feel like there is someone scraping up and down my throat and everything hurts. Well good thing it is the weekend.

I hope you are all well. Sorry my blog is so short. I am going to take a nap. Love you all

Lazy Sunday, Debrief Monday, and Bonding Tuesday

Sorry I haven't written in a while. The Internet SUCKS here and with my phone sucking as well, well as you can tell I don't get to go online as much as I would like. So let me recap what I have been doing for the last couple of days.

Sunday was a lazy day. I tried to sleep in but my body is getting used to waking up at obnoxious hours and chose to do so on Sunday. As well as it being day light savings time as well. I got up and got some things done that I needed to do. Then I had lunch and sat on my butt and watched football for the rest of the day. My team had our celebration BBQ for our first project well done. It was pretty amazing I must say. Then I ended up going to bed at 9pm.

Monday we had PT at 5:30am. My team played capture the flag in the bitch black, using water bottles as flags. It was pretty fun besides being up that early, it was better than running around the track. After PT I met with my group to go over what we were going to do for our debrief about our 3 day project. We came up with a poem about not being able to right poems as our closure which was funny. The person that is a VST with me did not want to participate so I did all the work. O well. We had the debrief which went very well and we were told that by the assistant program director. After the debrief we had tool training which is basically what you thought it would be dad. "This is a hammer, this is a screw, blah, blah, blah. But we actually got to use some of the tools which was nice. Then we went to the grocery store to pick up food for the week. The people that were making dinners for the week had a budget of $16 to spend. That is hard to do when you are feeding 11 people, But some how I did it. I am making American Chopped Sewy. Sorry as you all know I can't spell. Then we got back made our own dinners and it was time for bed.

Today was the ropes course. It was a team building activity. We went to Iowa University in Iowa City. My group had a great time and I think we really did bond and learn more about each other and how to trust each other. Then we got back to campus and had a team meeting. At 6:30 I have a room inspection then I am done for the day. I hope to get to sleep early because we have PT at 5:30am in the morning. YUK. But I am actually getting used to it. Love you guys

Day off

Today I got to sleep in till 8:30am which was AMAZING. It is weird how I used to think 8:30am was early. Now it's sleeping in compared to 5am. I took a long shower, did my hair, which made me feel like a girl again. Then I went to the computer lab to look up some stuff for our debriefing on Monday for the short project we did. Then I read for a while. It was a nice relaxing couple of hours.

I met everyone at the van at 11:00am and we were on our way to Cedar Rapids, IA. It took us about 45 minutes to get there. Our first stop was Goodwill which I wasn't thrilled about but thats ok. Then we went to a Super Target, which I had never been to before. There was a Verizon store next to the Target so I went there because I needed to get a new phone or get mine fixed because I am having so many problems with it. Well that Verizon store only sold the phones and didn't have tech people so they told me I had to go to another store a little ways up the road. I was pissed.

Then I went to the Super Target. Let me tell you that it was AMAZING. I wish that there was a Super Target near home. You can do your food shopping at great prices then shop for other things at great prices all at the same time and place. It was awesome.

After Super Target we went to the other Verizon store that was right next to the Lindale Mall. Well this Verizon store wasn't any help either. I told them my problem and she said I am not seeing the problem now so I can't help you. I seriously wanted to punch the lady in her face. I said, "So basically I have to deal with a phone that randomly shuts off, doesn't connect to the internet, which is an extra service I pay for and the battery always running out." She told me that she couldn't help me. I am still fuming. I tried to talk to the manager but he wasn't any freaking help either. I am about to ask mom for help. Mommy help me please.

After Verizon I went to find the rest of my team. I met them at a Mongolian place in the mall. This place was just like Fire and Ice but didn't have the steaks and burgers. It was yummy. After that I went and bough two Iowa T shirts and then we left the mall and headed back to Vinton.

When we got back I went to my room and read for a while which was great. After that I went to the computer room and tried to upload some photos but the stupid internet keep pooping out on me. So it wasn't working and I am going to try to upload the pictures tomorrow. Then it was time for duty. We cleaned Rice Hall and it wasn't bad at all. After cleaning my team leader Shalyn let us into the give and take closet. The give and take closet is a closet with stuff that people left here from last year for us to use. You can take stuff from the closet and keep it or give it back and you can donate stuff and they will put it in there. It got a bunch of good stuff from there.

Then it was time for something to eat, I had left over eggplant parm which was yummy in my tummy. Then me and Sarah watched a bunch of movies and did puzzles. Now it is time for me to get to bed because I am falling asleep in the computer lab. Hope you all had a good Halloween. Love you guys.

More fire pits and trash pickup

Today has seemed like it has gone on forever. I had PT this morning at 5:30am, meaning I had to wake up at 5am. After PT I changed and had breakfast. Then we drove to one of the Benton County Conservation parks. In all we went to 4 parks today. We cleaned out fire pits which is harder than you think, especially when it poured the night before. We moved HEAVY picnic tables, swept pavilions, put sticks in piles, picked up TONS of trash, especially beer cans, and a couple more things. The day wouldn't have been bad if my Team Leader and one of my team mates werent sick and we not with us today. As well as myself, my friend Sarah, and another one of my teammates not feeling good.

We got back around 5 and I changed and heated up the egg plant parms that I put together the night before. After dinner I did laundry, started a puzzle and watched "Failure to Launch" with Sarah. Now I am offically exhausted and I am going to bed.

The good news is we have tomorrow and Sunday off. Tomorrow around 11 some of my teammates and I are going into Cedar Falls where everything is. Then I am going to hang around the rest of the day. We are having a celebritory cookout for dinner, which we are all really excited about. My team and I are on Duty tomorrow night which isn't that bad. Then Sunday I have no plans except watching football and hanging around. I am looking foward to the next couple days of just relaxing.

Love you guys

Roger Park and Finding out our first Spike

Today we worked at Roger Park. I cleaned out fire pits in the pouring rain today. I got soaked. O by the way I bruised my tail bone yesterday by jumping into a pile of leaves butt first. After getting soaked in the rain we went inside to get dry and then I painted signs.

We found out were we are going on our first Spike!!! We are going to Toledo Ohio. We will be working with Toledo Gardens. The website is toldeogarden.com. I am borrowing someones computer so I am going but I will write more later.

Love you guys.

First day of the 3 day project

Today was the first day of my three day project. The day did not start out so good. I ended up turning off my alarm when my roommates went off at 5am. I got up at 6:40am 10 minutes before I had to be at muster. Thank god I laid out everything the night before. I made it to muster in Rice which is across campus from my room with a minute to spare. Then we drove to the Benton County Conservation Park. My team split up in groups and my group went with the park ranger and used loppers to make trails wider. Then we had a break for lunch in which we sat in the van and ate and got warm. Then we went back outside to make trails wider with loppers. I have pictures of me doing this if you don't believe me. I will put them on here soon.

When we were done with the trails we raked leaves then each of us got to jump into this HUGE leaf pile. It was so much fun, I felt like a little kid again. I jumped into the leaf pile butt first and now my butt is killing me. I thought I had enough padding there but I guess I didn't cause my tail bone is killing me. Then we took a group picture which came out really good. Today was a good day. Unfortunately we still need to do PT. I am already exhausted so I don't know how I am going to do PT at 8pm. I will be doing it very slowly.

I am planning to do some laundry and relax in bed until PT. After PT I am going straight to bed. Love you all.

We get a break from the traings and from people talking at us all day. And I actually get to be outside. Did you ever think you would here me say that Mom? O. I found out my Rep Roles for the team. I am the Vehicle, Safety, and Tools Officer as well as the Photo Rep. I got both jobs I wanted :) Well I should get to bed. I want to have lots of energy for planting trees. Love you

5:30 am PT and STD training

Today was an early start. I had PT this morning at 5:30. We were outside running in the rain before the freaking sun was up. After PT was a community meeting and then we had STD training. Yup that is exactly what it sounds like. It was amusing but nothing that I didn't already know.

After STD training we had a Quality of Life training that was mostly about substance abuse. Every chance they get here they talk about not abusing drugs and alcohol and it is starting to get pretty annoying.

After the Quality of Life training was lunch, in which I had a Swiss grilled cheese sandwich and veggies with hummus. After lunch was EEO training. Can you tell that they like their acronyms here? (Did I spell that right?) Dad let me know if I spelled that right. EEO stands for Equal Employment Opportunity. Which again is nothing that we all already don't know. During this training we had a fire drill which helped us all wake up.

After the EEO training we were done until 4:15. I went back to my room and read for a little while, which I haven't been able to do much while I have been here because every time I go to read I end up falling asleep. After reading for a while I finished unpacking FINALLY. It have been here more than a week and I just finished unpacking. I think I am a procrastinator don't you? Then it was time for the Rep Role Fair.

Each person on the team needs to have a Rep Role. These are roles like a Newspaper Editor, a Peer Helper, a Serving Learning Inistiator, a Project Outreach Liaison, A Vehicle Safety and Tools Officer, a Media representative, a CAP (sorry I forget what that stands for) it has something to do with recruiting new members and telling your NCCC journey to people to try to get them to join. Other Rep Roles are yearbook member, Photo Editor, Grocery Shopper and a couple more I can't remember.

The Roles that I am hoping to get are the Vehicle Safety and Tools Officer and the grocery shopper. Mom and Dad know how good I am at grocery shopping. I would also be ok with Photo editor or yearbook member instead of the grocery shopper. We wrote down what Roles we preferred and our Team Leader (TL) is going to try to pick the Roles from there.

By the way I had the BEST Barbequed Chicken Sandwich for dinner tonight. My teammate Amy made it. She put frozen chicken breasts, a bottle of BBQ sauce, and two bottles of Italian dressing in a crock pot, put it on high and cooked it all day. It came out AMAZING. I made potatoes to go with it. Thanks Dad for letting me know the degree to cook the potatoes out and how to tell when they were ready. My team mates thank you as well.

Well I am exhausted from getting up at 5am and being in trainings all day. I will update you guys tomorrow. Love you all.

Making a difference and Corn maze/Bar hopping

Yesterday was make a difference day. All the corp members went to a community in Iowa City to conduct surveys about crime. The people in the neighborhood did a bBBQ for us which was really nice of them. On the way back from Iowa City we went grocery shopping as a team. Now that was pretty eventfull.

After the two hour drive back to Vinton I tried to take a nap but for some reason I couldn't fall alseep which is weird for me. So I read my book and hung out with some people. This will surprise some of you. I went to a scarey Corn Maze at around 9 at night. I almost peed my pants, I am not going to lie. But I was not the only one that was scared. I looked down a bunch of the time. I went with my friend Sarah and a couple other people. O, on the way to the scarey Corn Maze I had to make my first 911 call because a lady in a car was going to wrong way on a one way highway. That was pretty scarey.

Anyways after the Corn Maze I went to Ron Da Voo with Sarah, and my roommate Laura. We met a bunch of people there. After we were there for a while we decided to go to the other bar in town which is Mickey's. We walked to Mickey's which is about a mile from Ron Da Voo. Mickey's was pretty crowded with locals and NCCC members. I stayed there for a while but then I left because I was tierd and there were a ton of really drunk people and I just didn't want to deal with that.

I walked back to campus with a couple people and then laid in bed and read for a while. I went to sleep about 1 and didn't wake up till about 11 am today which was awesome. I haven't been able to do that in a while. I watched some football, the Pittsburg game because my roomie is a huge Steelers fan. Then I went to the Chinese resturant in tow with 4 other people from my team. NOw I am just hanging out for a while.

Yesterday was Becky's baby shower and I am sorry that I missed it but I am also glad that I am here on this journey. As the days go on I realize more and more about how glad I am that I made to decision to come here. Anyways I will keep you all updated. Love you guys.

More meetings and Duty

Today was the first day of 5:30 a.m. PT. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but I did find out that I can't really function on 6 hours of sleep. We had some more meetings. I can't rememver the name of the trainings but I do remember what they were about. During the first meeting today I could not keep my eyes open at all. I felt so bad but I would have taped my eyes open if I had tape.

After that meeting we had lunch which was left over mac and cheese. Then we had some more meetings. This meeting was about Media and promoting NCCC properly. It was kinda useless. The woman presenting was a B*tch by the way. This is from a teaching prospective as well as from someone listening to the lecture.

After the meeting we had a team meeting going over what we thought a team is, what we want our team to accomplish during CTI and what we were going to have for dinner for the next week.

Then I made dinner with my team mates Sarah and Jacob. We made chicken pesto pasta. The pesto was out of a packet because we don't have a blender or a food processor. I so wish I had Aunt Joyces pesto. The dinner was really good and the team loved it. O my eggplant parm from last night was a HIT and they want me to make it every week. That makes me happy.

Starting in 7 minutes my team and I are on duty for the night. Which means cleaning one of the buildings kitchens, lounges, and hall ways. We also found out that we are on duty on Halloween which none of us are happy about. But what can you do? Tomorrow is make a difference day where we are going to a community in Iowa City to conduct surveys for a community that is looking into rebuilding. They are doing a cook out for us after which is nice.

Anyway I have to get to duty. I love you all. Hope you are liking the blog.

CPR and more group bonding

Today was a good day. I had CPR all day and thought that it would be bad. But I was wrong, it was good and I learned everything. I also got a BIG package from mom today. I knew most of what was in it but I loved the card that was in the package. The card said, "Go confidentley in the directions of your dreams, Live the life you've imagined." Thanks mommy for that.

In between the CPR training I walked to Alco in the rain with two of my teammates. After CPR training I made eggplant parm for my teammates. My teammate Lauren make toasts with garlic and cheese, roasted green beans, and roasted carrotts with rosemary and the dinner was AMAZING. After dinner and bunch of us hung around the table talking for about an hour and a half. I found out that a guy named Jim on my team LOVES basketball too. I really like bonding with my teammates.

This is a GREAT experience and I am loving it right now. I thought I would miss home alot more than I do now. I haven't actually done something on my own like this before. It makes me feel like a stronger person. I also feel like I have more of a purpose. I am meeting a bunch of interesting and unique people. I have learned that you can't judge a book by it's cover. I am so glad I made this decision. I

So right now I am following Dad's advice, "Do what you like, Like what you do." I want you guys to know that I think about you alot. I am sorry that I haven't been able to talk anyone much since I have been here. I have been pretty busy with CTI (Corp Training Institute). I am hoping that I will be able to talk to a bunch of you this coming weekend, especially on Sunday. On November 13th we are having an induction ceremoney and we will all be inducted into the AmeriCorp. I am pretty excited about that.

Tomorrow I have PT (exercise) at 5:30 a.m. in the gym with all the other Corp members. Lets see how that goes lol. Well I should be getting ready for bed. Love you all.

Cooking class and group bonding

Today I had a cooking class for dummies. The person teaching the class was an idiot and mean. Anyway today is a good day. My group really bonded today which was really nice. There is a girl named Sarah in my group that I absolutley love. SHe is very sweet and has the same reactions to things as I do. Everyone else is my group is great besides two people. One girl thinks she is better than everyone else and then there is a guy who is not a team player and doesn't really want to me here and has already gotten in trouble. I love my team leader Shalyn.

We got done with our traininga at 2:30 today which was AMAZING. After the trainings we had a group meeting in which we talked about food. Always a GREAT topic for me. We talked about what foods we liked and what foods we didn't like. Can you believe I have some people on my team that don't like veggies. And then we have one girl (the snotty girl) that will only eat fresh veggies and garlic and won't eat minced garlic. GRRRRR. I like her outside of her food preferences.

Being here I have realized that I don't eat as much as at home because I don't have much if any down time. But unlike you tihnk Mom we don't eat healthy here. It is hard to eat healthy with the amount of money we are given as well as having enough food to feed 12 mouths.

Tomorrow my team and I have CPR all day which is not going to be fun. I told my team that I had dyslexica and ADHD so they know I might bug them for help during the trainings. They were all really great about it. Also my roommate gave me her cold/cough which I am not too thrilled about but atleast I don't have it as bad as she does.

I found out I have a free day on SUNDAY which I am hoping to go see my family in Iowa city, Lauren, Chester, and Micheal. I hope all is well with you guys. I am liking it here and I still can't believe I am here. Love you guys.

Pt and Baseline

Long time no talk. lol. So I sent a bunch of you my lovely picture of me in my uniform I hoped you like it. For those of you that I didn't send it to let me know if you want to see my sexy picture. By the way today went alot better than yesterday. We did a bunch of trainings today. I had a PT and a nutrition class today. I also had my baseline test today. I ran a 14 minute and 51 second mile. I ran/walked it. I did 13 sit ups and 15 girly push ups. After the fitness test we had room inspections. That went good, Laura and I did a good job expect we forgot to dust our desk but we did remember to clean the inside of our windows and the tops of our bureaus.

Then it was dinner time. I I walked into my kitchen and my team mates ask me how to cook chicken. Thanks to Dad I know how to make a great meal out of the contents of the fridge. I made pasta with baisl and garlic chicken. It was yummy.

After dinner I hung out in the Rice lounge with a bunch of the girls. They are all so nice. We are going to start a knitting group. How funny is that? I bet grandma Duddy would love that. Anyway I am falling asleep here.

Guess what? I am taking a cooking class tomorrow instead of driving a 15 passenger van. hehehe. Love you guys. Thanks for the support.

Monday's Blog: Van Training and team reveal

Yesterday mornings muster wasn't that bad at 6:50 a.m. but looking back at it now I am not liking it because I am falling asleep at this computer. Yesterday we had van training in the auditorium for 6 hours, which was sitting watching videos and talking about certain situations. We went outside and learned to check gauges, oil, and fluids. Guess what else I learned? I learned how to change a tire on a freaking 15 passenger van. O and I also learned how to jump a 15 passenger van. That was an experience. In between the van training sessions I had my physical which included 2 shots one of which made my arm feel like it was going to fall off.

After the exciting van training I had my final dinner with my G group. Emily, my team member made pasta with brocilli and pesto. YUMMY. After dinner we all played frissbee in one of the fields. Then it was time for the big Team Reveal. That was exciting but I was also sad and nervous, one because I liked my team and second because I was hoping my new team would like me. After the team reveal I got hit with this feelings of being homesick and sad. I got back to my room and cried. I think I cried for a couple of reasons. One, because I was so over tired from the long day. Two because I had gone through so much change already. And lastly was I had already invested a bunch of time into getting to know my team. I called mom and her and dad helped me. (Thank you guys for that by the way). I realized I was emotional when Mom told me she took a picture of my car covered in snow and I started to cry.

YOu guys know I am not great with change so this is a little hard for me because it is all happening at once. I know this was the right decision for me but it doesn't stop it from being hard. And I need to realize that it is ok to feel homesick but I can't let it get in the way of my time here. Well today is another day and I can tell you know that I am feeling better. I owe that to mom, dad, Lauren, and my roommate Laura.

Tonight I have my fitness test which includes me running/walking a mile timed and doing as many push ups as I can in 1 minute as well as doing as many sit ups I can do in a minute. Yeah that would be a fun site for you guys to see. I am glad I lost 19 lbs before I came here.

Until later tonight. Love you guys.

Uniforms and football

This morning when I woke up I looked around and said to myself, "Where am I?" Then I thought o yeah, I am on an adventure. That put a smile on my face. To be honest I thought that I would be so nervous and want to go home once I got here. But I am excited and happy to be here and for the moment I am not home sick. Yes I miss everyone at home and my house but I am glad I decided to come here. I think it is one of the best decisions I have made in my life so far.

Anyway I got to sleep in till 9:30 which is pretty nice since I haven't done that in a while. My roommate Laura and I went for a walk to Alco which is a general store down the street from campus. It is like a smaller version of Walmart. We started laughing once we saw the Alco because there is the Alco, then there are these two big silos and a huge corn field behind it. I took some pictures of this scene for you and will upload them tomorrow.

After going to Alco I got issed my BDU "Battle Dress Uniform" which is in all men's sizes and is kind of commical. They didn't have my size in a bunch of stuff so right now I am walking around in clothes that are too big for me hbut I will be getting my sizes soon enough. I didn't get my steeled toe boots yet either but they are coming as well.

After getting my BDU I got to watch FOOTBALL. Which made me really happy and made it feel more like Sunday. I was so excited when I found out that I was going to be able to watch the Patriots game. What a game that was. It was sad to see it snowing at home and that I missed the first snow in MA. The weather was nice here today. It was chilly this morning but nice this afternoon.

I had dinner with my team tonight which was nice and learned about what the plan was for tomorrow. Tomorrow I have to be at Muster (which is a specific spot my team meets and talks about the schedule for the day) at 6:50 a.m. YUK. I haven't had to be up that early for a long time. That means I have to get up at 6 and put on my uniform and look the way I need to for the rest of the day. After Muster is breakfast then we have Van training till 12 then lunch then more van training till 4 Yuk again. BUT I find out my perminant group tomorrow night so I will keep you posted. So far I am LOVING it here. If you guys want to know about anything else leave a post on here and let me know. I am not sure what else to write here.

O by the way we have under ground tunnels connecting the buildings on campus together. It is awesome. I am going to go over by way of under ground tunnel to the other dorm and watch some more football. Love you all.

Birds in engines and Ron Da Voo

So lets start with the beginning of my day. I left my home sweet home at 5:00 this morning. I said good bye to Mom and Dad without crying. That's a big deal. Then I was off to and my first stop was Chicago. Well my flight to Chicago was great. The flight to Iowa was a different story. The plane that was supposed to take me to Iowa got run into by a flock of birds. That damaged the plane. So my plane was delayed. Well they couldn't fix the plan so they had to put me on another flight. So I didnt get to Iowa till 2. But my team was waiting for me at the baggage claim. Then we all walked around Vinton to get familiar with the town, which is not hard to do. Then I finally got to campus. I got to my room and met my roommate Laura who is awesome. I did some unpacking then met up with some girls from my team had dinner. Then we went to the local bar, Ron Da Voo. I got back to the room a little while ago. I met some really nice people. I am loving it here. Tomorrow I am getting my uniform. Yeay! Love you all.

The night before

Hi all,
Welcome to my blog. So it the night before I leave for Heaven. No wait! Iowa. I am sitting in my bed with mom who has helped me get everything together in this crazy week. This all happened so fast. A week ago today I found out that I was actually accepted into the Americorp. So tomorrow, "I am leaving on a Jet plane..." To start the newest chapter of my life. I am going to miss so many people but don't worry I will annoy you all the way from Iowa. I am excited to start this journey and help people. Stay tuned for the next update.
